Accessible Design

I’ve designed this website to be inclusive, engaging, and easy to use for everyone, with a focus on individuals with visual impairments or dyslexia. Every decision I’ve made is guided by empathy, accessibility, and thoughtful UX principles.

To improve readability, I’ve avoided using pure black and white, opting instead for off-white and off-black tones for most text and backgrounds. These reduce glare and create a more comfortable reading experience, particularly for users with dyslexia.

In key areas, I’ve used contrasting colour combinations like off-black with yellow or pink to add vibrancy and ensure important elements stand out. These choices align with the principle of visual hierarchy, helping users navigate content more effectively.

I’ve ensured that text across the site averages 60 characters per line. This small but important detail keeps reading comfortable and engaging, preventing content from feeling overwhelming.

To enhance legibility, I’ve chosen a clean, sans-serif font that’s easier to read, particularly for users with dyslexia. The font size is never smaller than 20px, exceeding accessibility standards to achieve a WCAG AA pass rate. Consistency in type styles further reduces cognitive load, making it easy for users to scan and absorb information.

The website layout is designed with simplicity and clarity in mind. Generous spacing between lines and sections ensures the content feels approachable and uncluttered. Structured headings and subheadings create a clear information hierarchy, allowing users to quickly find what they’re looking for.

Buttons, links, and other interactive elements have been designed with bold, contrasting colours and larger touch targets to make them easy to use for individuals with motor or visual impairments. These elements also incorporate feedback cues, like hover states, to reassure users that their actions are working as intended.
